Message from RDC Chief Executive, Peter Guerin

Rotorua District Council has embarked on a special programme to develop and enhance facilities and services for the Rotorua community - services that would usually be difficult to achieve at a high level from conventional funding sources, such as rates.

The project that saw the Rotorua Partner Programme initiated for the Energy Events Centre. This was originally promoted by the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust (RECT) and was ‘kicked off’ by the Trust with a generous contribution of $10m towards the project, a figure which was later increased to $12.5m. The council subsequently committed a further $6.5m to the Energy Events Centre project.

The balance has been raised through a number of companies, businesses and organisations which joined the council and the Rotorua Trust in supporting this project, to the point where the target of $28m to build the state-of-the-art Energy Events Centre was achieved.  The Energy Events Centre, is now open and operating extremely succesfully, with business levels well in advance of earlier business plan modeling.  This new facility is a model example of what the Partner Programme can achieve within our community.  The Partner Programme focus has now moved on to help achieve further significant projects.

In the future, Rotorua District Council will be identifying many millions of dollars needed for projects that will benefit the community in the Rotorua District.

The council is working closely with its community and as a result, a number of ‘Community Outcomes’ have been identified through the Bright Future Rotorua’ project. These are the priorities that our residents aspire to for Rotorua in the future. The Rotorua Partner Programme will help us get there.

In partnership with a number of business groups, organisations and individuals, RDC has also launched its strategy for economic growth in the future. This is the BrightEconomy’ programme and it is expected that associated projects will be identified that require a partnership between Council and other organisations if it they are to succeed.

A list of projects and other opportunities will always exist on our ‘drawing board’ - projects that relate to various areas of our community’s cultural, economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Partnerships can help make move these programmes from the drawing board to become realities.

The Rotorua Partner Programme also recognises that there are opportunities for the Rotorua District council to enhance its working relationships with important district stakeholders.

The key to the Rotorua Partners’ Programme is the recognition that Rotorua and its future are not only the responsibility of the council.  The future of the district lies in the hands of many, and is dependent on the establishment and maintenance of long term relationships between the council and its partners.

The Rotorua Partners acknowledged on this website, will be integral to the success of Rotorua as it grows, and we applaud their commitment to our district’s future.
