Having been held in Gisborne and Hamilton for the last 20 years, the New Zealand Country Music Entertainer of the Year competition is moving to Rotorua for the first time.

The event will be held in late September and has been attracted to the new Energy Events Centre. Convenor Flo Pahuru from Gisborne was reported in the Daily Post as saying that the event was moving away from Gisborne because it was "not central enough for competitors and numbers had been dwindling". She said Tauranga and Hamilton had also been considered but Rotorua was "one of the country music meccas." Organisors are expecting up to 1300 people at the competitions.
